Sycamore Island
Meeting Minutes

May 13, 1992

The May meeting of the Club was called to order on the Island by Vice President Charlie Trammell III at 8:05 pm. Present were: Charlie Trammel III, John Matthews, Pat Barnett, Gerry Barton, John Thomson, Peggy Thomson, David Lyles, Peter Jones.

The minutes of the April meeting were approved as printed in the May issue of the Islander.

Financial Secretary Marilyn Fuch's report showed deposits of $1,766.50 in the club's account during the past month. All members have now made a payment on their 1992 dues.

Membership Secretary Pat Barnett reported one resignation from Regular membership in the past month. Daisy Irene Sealy was elected to Regular membership from the waiting list.

Treasurer Ken Sales' report showed a balance in the Club's cash management account of $40,865.83 at the end of the reporting period.

Caretaker Peter Jones reported on an analysis of the Club's drinking water supply by a Frederick, Maryland lab. The analysis found that the Club's water supply is very acidic. No fecal bacteria were present, but the count of other bacteria was too high for the water supply to be considered potable. The Island's water supply must be treated before drinking. The ultraviolet filter in the caretaker's apartment no longer works, and must be replaced by another filter or by a chlorinator. We must also get some sort of treatment to reduce the acidity of the Club's drinking water. Peter and Captain John Matthews will continue to search for solutions to the problem.

Captain John Matthews reported that construction of the new deck was well underway. The construction process has discovered that the Virginia wall of the Clubhouse is sagging and will have to be shored up as part of the deck construction. The addition to the Caretaker's apartment has been stained to match the rest of the Clubhouse. John indicated that the painter has offered to scrape and stain the rest of the Clubhouse to match the existing color for $1,650.00. John strongly recommended that we proceed with this work, and the members endorsed the recommendation.

John Thomson indicated that he would continue to urge the Park Service to repair the path down to the towpath from the George Washington Parkway.

New Business
It was noted that Saturday caretakers should be reminded of the proper operation of the ferry, particularly in higher water levels. An appropriate diagram will be published in the next edition of the Islander and posted on the bulletin board leading up to the Clubhouse.

John Matthews noted that the ferry needed to be brought out of the water for inspection and painting.

Several members noted that the May 2 Potomac River Whitewater Canoe Race was a great success. Particularly noteworthy were the outstanding refreshments provided by Entertainment Chairpersons Cathy and Bruce Gaber.

The meeting adjourned at 9:05 pm.
