The meeting was called to order on Sycamore Island at 8:00 pm by President Jack Sanders. Present were: Jack Sanders, Al Brown, Pat Barnett, Peter Jones, Ken Sale, John Thomson, David Lyles, Tryon Wells, Phil Jones, John Matthews, Brad Coolidge.

The minutes of the September meeting were approved as printed in the October issue of the Islander.

Treasurer Ken Sale submitted a report for the month of September showing a balance of $31,410.00 in the Club's cash management account at the beginning of the month. The end of the month balance was not available because the monthly statement had not yet arrived.

Financial Secretary Marilyn Fuchs' report showed deposits of $434.00 in the Club's account during the past month.

Membership Secretary Pat Barnett reported no changes in membership during the past month. The waiting list has grown to 95 names.

Captain John Matthews reported that the new gutters on the Clubhouse had worked well during the last rain.

Caretaker Peter Jones reported that a hand-painted, black and white photograph of the Clubhouse taken before the flood of 1936 had been donated by Charlie Belt. Mr. Belt's family were members of the Club at the time the photograph was taken, and Mr. Belt recently visited the Club. The photograph with pictures of the donor will be hung in the Clubhouse.

Swimming Supervisor Al Brown noted that he has been unable to get a new ladder on the new, metal swimming raft while it was in the water, but will construct one when the raft is pulled out for the season. He pointed out the importance of the safety rope downriver of the raft which hopefully will secure the raft in time of high water.

Jack Sanders asked for one additional volunteer to serve on the Nominating Committee. Phil Jones volunteered, and the Nominating Committee is now composed of Jack Sanders, David Lyles, and Phil Jones.

The first off-Island meeting of the year will be in December at the home of John and Peggy Thomson.

The Fall Workfest was scheduled for Sunday, November 17, with a rain date of Sunday, November 25.

Two capital improvements to the Club were discussed. Jack Sanders noted that earlier this year the Club membership approved the building of a deck for the clubhouse. Funds were included in this year's budget to build the deck, and a motion to move forward with the construction of the deck with all due speed was approved unanimously. No plans have been drawn up or adopted, and Captain John Matthews will pursue this matter with the architect.

The replacement for the siding on the Clubhouse was also discussed. Several different types of siding were debated, and the Captain indicated that he would bring several different types of siding to the Fall Workfest for members to look at.

President Jack Sanders noted the earlier action of the Club to draw up a long-range plan on the future needs of the Club. Jack noted that he felt such a plan should be drawn up and presented to the Club in connection with the budget for 1992.

NEW BUSINESS
Several members brought up the idea of clearing more of a view on the eastern, or Virginia, side of the Island, and it was the sense of the meeting that the trees should be trimmed to afford more of a view of the river on that side of the Island.

John Thomson noted that between May 15 and September 15, approximately 1,100 people had been introduced to basic safety and canoeing skills at Tuesday and Thursday evening canoeing classes taught at Fletcher's Boat House (Tuesday evenings) and Swain's Boat House (Thursday evenings). John himself has been a mainstay of these classes for many years.
