The meeting was called to order on Sycamore Island at 8:06 by President Jack Sanders. Present were: Jack Sanders, Gerry Barton, Charles Trammel III, Robert Wear II, Pat Barnett, John Thomson, Betty Burchell, Art Gutnick, John Krasny, John Stapko, Peter Jones, Tryon Wells, David Lyles, Chris Lyles.

The minutes of the May meeting were approved as printed in the June edition of The Sycamore Islander.

The date of the Bob Burchell Memorial picnic on the Island was set for Jul y 27 from 4pm until dark. All members are invited to attend.

Communications
President Jack Sanders reported on a legislative alert from the American Society of Civil Engineers noting that the Bush Administration's Fiscal Year 1992 Budget Request for the U.S. Geological Survey's Water Resources Division would lead to drastic cutbacks in the agency's vital surface water collection programs. The membership endorsed a recommendation that Jack write a letter on behalf of the Club to Senators Sarbanes and Mikulski and Congresswoman Morella expressing the Club's opposition to these proposed budget cuts.

Reports
Treasurer Ken Sale submitted a report for the month of May showing a balance in the club's cash management account of $37,236.65 at the beginning of May and $36,881.65 at the end of the month. Approximately $1200 was disbursed to Captain John Matthews during the past month for work on roofing, new gutters, re-screening and several other items.

Financial Secretary Marilyn Fuch's report showed deposits of $1,096.00 during the past month.

Membership Secretary Pat Barnett noted that Robert Wear has requested transfer from inactive to Regular membership. This request is automatically granted, and puts Regular membership at 156. There are 89 members on the waiting list. The last person on the waiting list accepted for Regular membership had been on the waiting list since March 1986.

Caretaker Peter Jones reported on the repairs made by workers under the direction of Captain John Matthews during the past month.

Grounds Supervisor Betty Burchell noted that the old Circle of Warmth from the Clubhouse is in the process of being converted into an outdoor cooking grill. Weeding and other lawn care chores will be done on the Third Saturday work session in June.

Electrical Supervisor Art Gutnick reported that several ceiling fans are on order and will be installed as soon as they arrive: 2 upstairs in the Clubhouse, 1 on the screen porch, and 1 in the Caretaker's apartment.

Old Business
The proposal to create a new Safety Committee in the Club was outlined by David Lyles and Betty Burchell. After a general discussion, this proposal was adopted unanimously as printed in the May edition of The Sycamore Islander.

Members noted that a new and louder signal bell was needed on the ferry rope. One will be found and installed.

New Business
Membership Secretary Pat Barnett requested guidelines from the mernbership for granting inactive membership status. Pat noted that the Club By-Laws allow the granting of inactive membership to those who move away from the Washington, D.C. area for a period of one year or more and to those who must "for compelling personal reasons- reduce their commitment to the club for a year or more. After considerable discussion, the membership decided that they did not want to give more specific guidelines than those spelled out in the By-Laws and that applications for inactive membership status "for compelling personal reasons" would be acted on by the Club on a case-by-case basis.

Tryon Wells offered to review prices for a new ping-pong table for the Clubhouse and report to the members at the next meeting.

David and Chris Lyles gave a brief report on their recent canoe trip down the St. John River in northwestern Maine, and offered to give a slide shoot of their trip at the September meeting.
